How do I begin the process of installing a backup generator system for my home in Seattle and what is included in the cost?

Determining the proper size of the generator. We have to figure out what size and type of system would work best for you. If you are unsure what type of system you wish to install, We recommend you take a moment and review the two main types of systems available for home application. Please click here to see information regarding both the standby, and portable systems.

If you have researched the information and are still unsure as to what would be the best fit for your needs, simply call us at 425-508-6382. A W E Electric representative will assist you (at no cost) in the selection process!

Once we have selected the size and system that is right for me, what can I expect to happen next?

Once you have selected the system that you feel is right for you, one of our certified 01 electricians will come out to` your home to perform a site survey. This is to assess the location of the generator proximal to the home as well as it’s fuel source. i.e., gas meter, propane tank, etc., estimate the amount of trenching (if necessary) as well as the length of electrical runs that must be made in order to connect the generator to the switch/panel in the home. Finally, assess any special needs, obstacles, or possible code compliance challenges that may affect the installation.

Once the site survey has been completed a customized estimate will then be prepared for your review.

  1. Upon estimate approval, a 50% deposit will be taken and the work will then be scheduled.
  2. W E Electric will then obtain both the mechanical and electrical permits authorizing the work to be performed.
  3. The first phase of the project typically includes the completion of all trenching and concrete cutting (should it be necessary) preparation of generator base, i.e., pressure treated wood frame, form up of concrete pad, retaining wall construction etc., installation of gas piping and pressurization of the system. Once these functions have been performed ground cover inspection will be called for.
  4. Once the inspector has signed off on ground cover, the second phase will consist of backfilling trenches, generator base completion, i.e., filling bases with crushed rock, pouring concrete, bolting to existing patio, etc. The generator will then be set in place and secured. Electrical wiring will be pulled/installed along with either the automatic or manual transfer switch/Interlock kit and electrical panel(s). All final electrical and gas connections will be completed. Once the work of phase two has been completed, final inspection will then call for. *See the image below for a custom 14KW, completed installation.
  5. The 3rd and final phase consists of the generator startup. This is where the generator’s weekly exercise period will be set and all the functions of the generator will be reviewed with the homeowner *as illustrated in the image below.

*This startup concludes the installation of the generator.

W E Electric, Generator Service Agreement Program

Once your generator project is complete, the last thing to be considered is the W E Electric, Generator Service Agreement. The purpose of this agreement is to relieve you of the responsibility of recalling the exact annual service date for your generator as well as the need to call and schedule the service itself. There is no monetary obligation up front and the agreement can be cancelled at any time. Upon enrollment in the program, A W E Electric representative will contact you when it is time to perform the unit’s annual service. Regardless of your participation in the program, the annual service must be performed in order to successfully maintain the unit’s warranty.

Preventative maintenance and why it is important for your generator.

Generators are extremely reliable, long lasting machines typically outlasting the lifespan of most internal combustion engines.

“Preventative maintenance service plays an important role keeping your generator running smoothly.”

The frequency of preventative maintenance service depends on the average running time of the generator and the environment the generator is operating in. For instance, longer running times and more extreme air temperatures (hot or cold) the more frequently service may be needed.

We follow OEM recommended maintenance schedules for our preventative maintenance services. We will perform a general inspection of the unit, understand your unit’s typical workload & operating environment and provide you with a recommendation for scheduled inspections and service. Common inspections include checking the following systems:

  1. Fuel system (diesel fuel requires more maintenance)
  2. Coolant system
  3. Lubrication system
  4. Air system (combustion and cooling air)
  5. Starting system (batteries and charger)
  6. Alternator (a frequently overlooked item)
  7. Transfer switch (another often-overlooked item)

Upon completion of the initial inspection, we will recommend weekly, monthly, bi-annual and/or annual inspections. Contact us to schedule the service or to learn more about our preventative maintenance services.
